7z vs 7za
7-Zip is a file archiver with the highest compression ratio. The program supports 7z (that implements LZMA compression algorithm), ZIP, CAB, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB formats.
Compression ratio in the new 7z format is 30-50% better than ratio in ZIP format.
- 7za : a stand-alone executable. 7za handles less archive formats than 7z
- 7z : unlike 7za, 7z does not need any others.
7z (7za) installed?
To check the 7z is installed or not:
$ which p7zip /usr/bin/p7zip ubuntu@ip-172-31-43-248:~
Or:
$ whereis p7zip p7zip: /usr/bin/p7zip /usr/lib/p7zip /usr/share/man/man1/p7zip.1.gz
Installing 7z
$ sudo apt-get install p7zip-full
Uncompress 7z
$ 7za e myzip.7z 7-Zip (A) [64] 9.20 Copyright (c) 1999-2010 Igor Pavlov 2010-11-18 p7zip Version 9.20 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,2 CPUs) Processing archive: myzip.7z Extracting myFiles/file1 Extracting myFiles/file2 Extracting myFiles Everything is Ok Folders: 1 Files: 2 Size: 12 Compressed: 194
The parameter 'e' specifies the 7z to be extracted.
Creating 7z file
To compress the directory and get a 7z file:
$ 7za a myzip.7z myFiles
where the 'a' used to append.
