DevOps / Sys Admin Q & A: Linux Systemd - FirewallD
FirewallD is frontend controller for iptables. FirewallD is a wrapper for iptables to allow easier management of iptables rules–it is not an iptables replacement. While iptables commands are still available to FirewallD, it's recommended to use only FirewallD commands.
Working with FirewallD has two differences compared to directly controlling iptables:
- FirewallD uses zones and services instead of chain and rules.
- It manages rulesets dynamically, allowing updates without breaking existing sessions and connections
To view the status of the FirewallD daemon:
$ sudo systemctl status firewalld ● firewalld.service - firewalld - dynamic firewall daemon Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/firewalld.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: inactive (dead) Docs: man:firewalld(1)
To start the service:

It's already been enabled, so we don't have to enable FirewallD on boot.
firewall-cmd
To get all configurations for all zones:
$ sudo firewall-cmd --list-all public target: default icmp-block-inversion: no interfaces: sources: services: dhcpv6-client ssh ports: protocols: masquerade: no forward-ports: source-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules:
As we can see from the output, it displays only the default zone (public) and two services (dhcpv6-client ssh)
$ sudo firewall-cmd --get-default-zone public
To get all configurations for all zones:

We can create our own custom service rules and add them to any zone. The configuration files for the default supported services are can be found at /usr/lib/firewalld/services and user-created service files are in /etc/firewalld/services.
To view the default available services:

The journalctl
is a utility for querying and displaying logs from journald which is systemd's logging service.
Since journald stores log data in a binary format instead of a plaintext format,
journalctl
is the standard way of reading log messages processed by journald.
To add the ldap service:
$ sudo firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-service ldap success $ sudo firewall-cmd --list-all public target: default icmp-block-inversion: no interfaces: sources: services: dhcpv6-client ldap ssh ports: protocols: masquerade: no forward-ports: source-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules:
Note this is just a runtime setup. To enable or disable the ldap service at boot time and to make it persistent, we need to add "--permanent" tag:
$ sudo firewall-cmd --add-service ldap --permanent Warning: ALREADY_ENABLED: ldap success
