AWS : S3 (Simple Storage Service) VI - Bucket Policy for File/Folder View/Download
If we're using an Amazon S3 bucket to share files with somebody else, we'll first need to make those files public. Maybe we're sending download links to someone, or perhaps we're using S3 for static files for our website or as a content delivery network. However, if we don't make the files public, our users will get an XML error message saying the file is unavailable.
Suppose we have a file for general public can access and download a file from S3 bucket.
As an example, we have a setup.exe in our bucket, s3.policy.test:
If we put the following link into a browser:
https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3.policy.test/setup.exe
We get the following error as we mentioned earlier:
Here are the steps to set the S3 policy:
- Sign in to Amazon Web Services and go to S3 Management Console.
- Select the bucket from the left. At right, click the Properties button if it's not already expanded.
- Go to the Permissions tab and hit the Add Bucket Policy link. (If we've previously added a policy, the button will say Edit Bucket Policy instead).
- Then, put the following into the pane:
{ "Version":"2012-10-17", "Statement":[ { "Sid":"AddPerm", "Effect":"Allow", "Principal": "*", "Action":["s3:GetObject"], "Resource":["arn:aws:s3:::s3.policy.test/*"] } ] }
- Hit "Save"
If we check the properties of the setup.exe, we see there is no lock in the link:
Now, we can download it via Browser using the same url!
